People can get lost in all the terminology of the LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and others) communities. This can cause therapists to be afraid of “saying the wrong thing” and accidentally offending a client. Through introducing therapists to the Spectrums Model of Sex, Gender, and Sexuality, the presentation will help clinicians learn about the differences between sex, core gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, sexual identity, and sexual behavior. In addition, we will explore how internalized homo/bi/transphobia, misogyny, and racism play out within these realms. This presentation will help clinicians understand the vocabulary, deconstruct and demystify the language and terminology, and gain understanding of the essentialist and socially constructed aspects of identity. They can also ask questions that they may have been afraid to ask!
