AIDS United, APLA Health, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, the City of Los Angeles AIDS Coordinator’s Office, East Los Angeles Women’s Center, the Los Angeles County HIV Drug and Alcohol Task Force (HIV DATF), JWCH Institute, REACH LA, UCLA Center for HIV Prevention and Treatment Services, and UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs will be hosting an event: “Addressing the Intersection of Racism and HIV” on Monday, December 12, 2016 at the California Endowment 8:30a.m.-3:30p.m.

The purpose of the event is to address the impact of race and racism in access, engagement and retention in HIV services beyond the lens of health disparities. At the end of the event, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the impact of mass incarceration on communities of color, particularly African American communities, and its impact on health outcomes, that includes disease acquisition, progression and treatment of HIV and Hep C while incarcerated.
  • Understand the impact of HIV criminalization laws among communities of color, transgender individuals, and sex workers and its relationship to HIV prevention efforts.
  • Explore the relationship between race, cultural competence, and implicit bias in healthcare settings and beyond.
  • Identify best practices to enhance cultural competency, reduce and eliminate implicit bias, and promote racial justice.
  • Understand the epidemiological changes of the disease from the height of the epidemic, highly impacting white men, to now, as a disease affecting communities of color.

A total of five (5) continuing education credits/contact hours are available for this training.
