AIDS Activist Gunther Freehill Dead at 60 | Karen Ocamb

To those unfamiliar with the life-and-death struggles during the AIDS crisis in the late 1980s and 1990s, the name Gunther Freehill might not resonate. But for the battle-scared veterans of ACT UP/L.A.’s fights for government recognition, intervention and funding; for live-saving common sense on condoms from the Catholic Church; and the attempt to translate radical awareness that “health care is a right” into the bureaucracy of the L.A. County Office of AIDS Programs and Policy, Gunther Freehill (pictured below marching with AIDS Diva Connie Norman in a photo courtesy of Raymond Reece) was a man on the frontlines

Getting to Wellness: A Roadmap for Improving the Health of Transgender Individuals in Los Angeles County

Getting to Wellness: A Roadmap for Improving the Health of Transgender Individuals in Los Angeles County

In response to HIV prevention priorities conveyed by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health’s Division of HIV and STD Programs (DHSP), the UCLA Center for HIV Identification, Prevention and Treatment Services (CHIPTS) recently convened an independent time-limited consortium to identify best practices and potential models to address the health and wellness needs of transgender people in Los Angeles County.

Building upon foundational work previously conducted by others in the transgender and service provider communities, the CHIPTS Transgender Consortium developed a report that outlines the status of transgender health and wellness, particularly with respect to HIV disease; provides an overview of some of the services available to transgender people in Los Angeles County; and describes opportunities to both strengthen and transform Los Angeles County’s response to the health and wellness needs of transgender people.

It Starts With a Nosebleed and Ends With a Dead Guy | Gawker

This is a lovely article that I thought people on the HIV Mental Health Task Force would really enjoy.

It Starts With a Nosebleed and Ends With a Dead Guy

It starts with a nosebleed and ends with a dead guy. Three dead guys, actually, and one of them is Ed Koch.

Something remarkable happened after Koch’s death: the New York Times rewrote his obituary. In the first version, nobody said what many people knew, and had long known: that Mayor Koch in his two terms in office as the highest ranking public official in the biggest city in the US and world financial center presided over a health crisis that was quickly going global and would, by the end of the 1980s, kill 50,000 Americans (as many Americans as died in the Vietnam War).

on 06/27 (National HIV Testing Day) Tell your U.S. Senator to fully fund programs vital to people living with HIV/AIDS in Fiscal Year 2014!

Tell your U.S. Senator to fully fund programs vital to people living with HIV/AIDS in Fiscal Year 2014!

Members of the Senate Budget Committee plan to vote on the federal spending bill that supports Fiscal Year 2014’s domestic HIV/AIDS programs in early July. As a part of National HIV Testing Day on June 27, TODAY, we need to let U.S. Senators know that in addition to HIV testing, they should fully fund access to HIV prevention, care, treatment and research!

Take Action Now:
On National HIV Testing Day, call your U.S. Senators and ask them to prevent harmful cuts and to fully fund HIV prevention, care, treatment and research programs!

Here’s how to take action:

Urge Congress to fully fund HIV programs now! Look up your Senators here, and dial the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 to be connected to your legislator.

Here’s what to say:

“Hello, My name is ______ from _______, and I am calling on National HIV Testing Day to ask my Senator to fully fund and prevent additional cuts to HIV prevention, care, treatment, and research programs. Early identification through HIV testing, and reliable access to effective HIV care and treatment helps people with HIV live healthy and productive lives and is cost efficient. Investing in HIV prevention today translates into fewer new infections and less spending on care and treatment in the future.

Thank you”

Thank you for taking action today!

Transgender Women 49 Times More Likely to Have HIV

A study of HIV among transgender women shows they are about 49 times more likely to have HIV than other adults of similar reproductive age, The Huffington Post reports. A team of researchers from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health analyzed studies from 15 countries over about a decade. Stefan Baral, MD, the lead researcher, told HuffPost he hopes health care providers and advocates will improve outreach to trans populations.
